What Hope Do You Know?

It’s that time of year again. The mall is packed. Toys R Us has overflow parking. Best Buy has lines around the store. The grocery store has six people deep in the check-outs. With all the early scuttle-butt of the holidays, I am stuck with a question I’d like to ask a random stranger (if I thought they would answer versus running away, or hitting me with a cabbage).

What hope do you know?

I think some would answer without honestly giving the question much thought. I hope to have a job come the first of the year. I hope the bank will find it in their hearts not to take my home. I hope to see my family member/friend get well. I hope the people I’ve known who have fallen back into drugs and alcohol would get back on track. I hope not to have to choose between dinner and the electric bill.

These are honest answers. They’re constant, present day realities which plague someone we personally know. Yet, the original question remains: What hope do you know?

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling…” (Eph. 1:18)

The word found here for hope is the Greek word Epis, the expectation of good. It’s an expectant anticipation something remarkable will happen. It’s not a matter of maybe it’ll happen, merely when. God has called each of us to Christ…and there is a hope in that call. Not just for what awaits us in heaven (eternal life), but a great expectation things will one day get better.

All this stuff we’re dealing with here on earth…will one day no longer be a concern. The hope of His calling will one day abolish all the things we worry about right now.
