The Today Show on Maria Kang

Unless you’ve been in a coma, in a submarine on the bottom of the ocean, or under a rock, you know Maria Kang has taken some heat for her fitness picture.
A lot of heat.
During the first airing of The Today Show, Matt Lauer and the team ripped the picture apart. Later on second airing (Kathie Lee has named it “Booze-Day Tuesday”), Hoda Kotb made the attack personal.
“I don’t like people who brag about something good…I like to walk by and say, ‘wow, you look great, what are you doing?’ I don’t like it when someone says, ‘look at me.’ I think there are lots of examples of people that look great, but there’s something about the tone, and showing the body, that grosses me out…”. (Hoda Kotb, Today.com – next to her big glass of wine)
What a snot.
Maria Kang is a wife, momma, personal trainer, fitness blogger, in recovery from an eating disorder, business and non-profit entrepreneur…and a MODEL. She’s won eleven beauty and fitness titles. Maria is a cover model for Max Sports and Fitness, Sacramento Parent, as well as a guest writer/columnist for a number of magazines. Oh – and the entire Kang family was featured in Acura’s 2012 commercial.
The Today Show should have gotten all of their facts together. Maria Kang is an inspiration.
Oh…and Julie Gerstein: considering NBC had plastered Kang’s name everywhere, you might have had someone proofread your contribution on Tuesday – her name is MariA – not Marie.
To Tell The Truth Tuesday: How I Found My Abs

Hey, look. Another write-up on abs!
Not really.
Take a peek at any magazine rack anywhere and you’ll see “Rock Hard Abs” in bold print near a set of…uh…rock hard abs. I get a little depressed when I see those racks (the magazines…and the abs).
I’m fairly certain I have abs…somewhere…under the crinkly skin nobody sees unless I parade around in the dark under a spotlight in a sports bra (guess that would mean I wouldn’t be in the dark, huh?). I’m certain they’re supposed to be located in the “gap”. No, not the Gap – but that space between my tube boobs and belly button (which could be mistaken for an Apple branding snafu: iButton??).
I think I found them.
On a good day I can suck in enough air to look like I got a Tupac two-pack there.
The Kitchen Gym

I’ve officially converted my kitchen in to a space which has multiple functions: coffee corner, peanut butter station, workout studio.
The table I picked up earlier in the year at IKEA is now the “L” to my desk in the office, the cart which was a floating island of sorts is now in the bathroom storing towels and much needed counter space (I had a plastic three drawer tall bin thing in there but the top bowed – that’s now hidden storage). Space is a much needed commodity in my home, so I removed items from the drawers and cupboards I rarely use and stuffed those in the storage closet. The items from the rolling island now occupy the drawers.
This is the new space:
This long bench was a $10.00 find at Target two years ago (I think it was a pricing error). It now holds my KBands gear, weights, a medicine ball, and all of my boxing gloves. AND the top is super sturdy for step-ups and other exercises.
And for Wanda, it provided a place to drop dead on (she really didn’t die):
Throwback Thursday: McChubby vs McSassy

I didn’t intentionally set out to have a zillion pair of sneakers out on the porch (technically more sneakers could be found in a bin, in a box over in the storage closet, in a plastic garbage bag, or in a New Balance box which presently doubles as a door stop device). The sneaker pile is a daily reminder I no longer weigh 360ish pounds…

Wanda’s All Heart: Saturday Early Bird Boot Camp

I want to give a MASSIVE shout out to Wanda D!
Wanda has a heart condition where her heart pumps about 30% to capacity (I reserve the right to correct this – I have another friend who’s lungs are functioning low, so I may have the numbers slightly off), she also has crummy kidneys which requires daily dialysis treatments. Last week at a short girls lunch out, Wanda told us she was going to come to boot camp, she felt motivated by me (sometimes that may not be the best thing to like about me, but I’ll go with it).
After the holiday I sent her an email with a short to-do list. Nothing major, I just wanted to make sure her health was first and foremost, but I didn’t hear back. My friend Anne said Wanda was still coming to class, and so was she! I was thrilled!
So thrilled in fact, I bypassed all three of my alarms (my anxiety and sleep issues don’t have the best timing). Thank God I have Momma Hen Anne who came to the house to make sure I was okay, it’s not like me to just not show up without a heads up.
Anyways, we all made it to the park and a had a really great time. I chased after Anne to keep up, coached them both through each exercise so they wouldn’t hurt already stressed joints, and they weren’t allowed to say “I can’t”.
Wanda did an incredible job! The woman with the heart condition, with crummy kidneys, who clearly stated she would take a nap as soon as she got home…she not only kept up but set the pace.
If these two feisty gals who are forever 21 can meet up at 7:00 on a crispy Saturday morning and allow me to chase them around a park for an hour – you can too. It’s just about healthy choices. And no healthy choice is a bad one (oh, and her doctor cleared her to participate!).
Wanda, you were awesome. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with you and Anne this morning.

Monday Motivation: Get a Buddy Better than You

A handful of us from church signed up for the Gilda’s Club 2013 5K Run/Walk on October 12th in honor of Foster Braun. Foster’s a member of our church, and also a radio personality here in the Detroit area (Foster has a voice that would melt Wolverine’s metal alloy adamantium skeleton). He’s married to a lovely woman, Ginny – they are just the perfect couple. Foster is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Our team, Team Foster, will be helping to raise funds for Gilda’s Club and the research to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.
Prepping for is so not like riding a bike.
My friend Rebekah and I got together last night to “run together”. My cocky-meter was set to about medium-high because you know, I workout. So we meet up, agree on timed runs (6 minutes on, 2 minutes off), set our respective fitness apps, and away we went for a nice 3.1 mile jaunt. I kept up once or twice, but for the most part Bekah was a good half mile ahead of me. It sucked. I got smoked by a mom of four extremely rambunctious boys!
Kick up your routine: consider a workout buddy who’s better than you are at a certain activity. It’s extra special if that buddy encourages and pushes you to go a little further – even if they’re a lot cuter than you and a half mile ahead of the game.
And if you’re able, consider making a donation to help us raise funds for Gilda’s Club and cancer research. Our team goal is $500.00. I’m hoping all of you will consider helping us make it to $2,000.00.
Get up & GO!
